A Rare Treat! Three Wheat Heads Inn – Thropton, Northumberland

While on holiday with our cat in a self-catering cottage in Northumberland recently we decided to go for a drink in the Three Wheat Heads pub. It was around 20 minutes walk from our cottage (downhill all the way – took longer going back!) It had good real ale and we thought we would check out the menu for possible future use. We were amazed to see that they had nine different vegetarian main courses so resolved to go back for my husband Tom’s birthday later in the week.

This we duly did and we were not disappointed. We had to wait a while because everything appeared to be cooked fresh, but it was no hardship with a wonderful view to admire in the meantime.

I chose mushroom and asparagus cakes with a tomato and tarragon sauce, served with salad and hand cut chips. The cakes were a little like risotto and utterly delicious, as was the sauce and I don’t usually like tomato sauces. Tom had vegetable and mushroom Sparange Theodora, a Greek-inspired casserole style dish, which he was also happy with. The menu also included the usual curries and lasagnes (all homemade), along with risotto but I can’t remember the other dishes, most of which sounded interesting and tasty. Desserts were also very nice and portions were more than generous. The staff were most helpful and I am sure they would be willing to amend dishes to make them vegan or otherwise remove disliked items. Highly recommended.
