Event report: healthy diet and lifestyle for ethnic minority older people

On 17 June I attended the launch of the Older People Services Development Project’s ‘Healthy diet and lifestyle for ethnic minority older people’. VfL had been consulted throughout the production of this report because many ethnic minority groups favour a vegetarian diet and enjoy vegetarian food. The report was published in English and six other languages. The event was held at Solsgirth House near Dollar and was a joyous affair with stick dancing, singing, Punjabi folk dancing and Tai Chi. It was very well attended with around 350 people, mainly from groups in Glasgow and Edinburgh, but some further afield. Lunch consisted of a range of vegetarian curries and a Chinese stir fry with cloud mushrooms. All food served was vegetarian, which was a bonus! There were only three information stands, VfL, Bield and Trust Housing but the crowded layout made it difficult for people to get to them. Many made the effort, however, and I was particularly pleased with contacts made with NHS Health Scotland (a specific health/lifestyle promotion unit) and a vegan member of the Care Inspectorate team.
