Based in West Lothian, Scotland, the Robertson Estate Women's Group was founded during lockdown to help reduce isolation by hosting virtual quiz nights, wine tasting and singing classes. The group grew in size and now has an active walking group and raises funds for the local primary school by holding Ladies Nights.
Founder Mrs Lee told VfL: “Many of our group have underlying heath conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol or heart conditions. We felt that as well as walking, healthy eating would benefit the members. I'd heard that plant-based food has health benefits, however many of us were unsure where to start with veggie or vegan food (or even what vegan is).”
She continues: “Because we are a self-managed and unfunded group, we have greatly appreciated the free and reduced cost virtual demos [provided by VfL]. These are fantastic because we can cook along and rewatch if we want to watch first, then cook at a later date. We have enjoyed all the kitchen ‘hacks’ and the fantastic range of recipes.”
Isabella Spiers, pictured above said: “I need to reduce my cholesterol and have enjoyed how tasty and easy the VfL recipes are. I've also learned lots of hints and tips. My husband and I love the Veganising Classic Dishes recipes. My husband has even joined in with the cooking!”
Mrs Lee concluded: “Many of the group are grandparents who babysit after school, so it’s been a nice activity to cook with our grandkids... the whole family feel included and get the benefit of the fab food.”
