Home Instead hosts cookery demonstration

Home Instead Charities recently provided the venue for a cookery demonstration by VfL Roving Chef Ollie. The event was for people living with dementia, and their carers.

Home Instead Charities launched Friendship and Memories Café in Faringdon, Oxfordshire earlier this year. The centre is also supported by Dementia Oxfordshire.

Home Instead supports older people living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease, and who live at home. The charity also supports their carers and families. The café welcomed a VfL cookery demonstration to help to alleviate the effects of isolation on older people – both on their physical and mental health.

Almost 30 people attended the event, at which chef Ollie demonstrated healthy, inspiring recipes, including pea and lavender soup, accompanied by flatbreads. Ollie also amazed the audience by creating a fantastic main course entirely from raw ingredients, making marinated courgette ribbons with tangy salsa verde. To finish the meal, Ollie showed the audience how to make chocolate pots, which he describes as simple and sumptuous.

During the demonstration, Ollie invited members of the audience to come up onto the stage and help with the cooking. “It's very important to show people that they can make fantastic healthy food,” Ollie says. “I like to encourage people to take these recipes away and try them at home – by themselves, or preferably cooking together.”

The demonstration was Ollie's first at the Friendship and Memories Café. “Cookery is a great way people can engage in a pleasurable and rewarding activity,” Ollie says.
