About the opportunity

Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the leading authority on diet and healthy living advice for older vegans and vegetarians. Since there are currently only two fully vegetarian care homes in the UK, one of VfL’s major goals is to improve the standard of vegan and vegetarian catering in existing homes. We seek to do this through our UK List, which is a geographical listing of organisations and care homes that make a special effort to cater for vegetarians and vegans. We are striving towards a vision where at least 1 in every 6 UK care homes are members of our UK List – and 1 in every 100 will be VfL accredited. Meeting the needs of a diverse range of older people is important to us, too. You’ll help VfL become the first port of call for information, support and advice for older vegans, vegetarians, their families, friends and a broad range of care caterers.

What are we looking for?

We are looking to recruit new members to our board of trustees who meet six times a year via video conferencing, or in Greater Manchester. This is a voluntary role – with expenses paid. We are looking to recruit a vegetarian or vegan who has considerable experience and skills in commercial, third sector, or statutory partnership organisations at management level. This experience might include responsibility specifically for treasury management or the organisation’s Human Resources function. You will be committed to the aims of VfL, and able to articulate the contribution you believe you can make to furthering these aims, recognising VfL as an organisation with an important role to play in the health and well-being of older vegetarians and vegans. You will understand that to pursue its aims effectively, VfL requires good management, including well-supported staff who have opportunities to develop.

Practical considerations

The board currently meets six times per year (January, March, May, July, September, November) via video conferencing, and these meetings are held on a Saturday. At least one meeting per year is held in Greater Manchester. Travel expenses are covered by the charity. The board makes some decisions in between meetings, mostly via WhatsApp or email. This could include decisions on applications to the Vegetarian & Vegan Fund, for example.

To apply

Please send a covering letter along with a CV of no more than 2 pages to jobs@vegetarianforlife.org.uk by the extended deadline of 27 January 2022, FAO Chair, Dr Barbara Sharp. For an informal chat about the role, please send an initial email and we can arrange a phone call.
