Vegetarian for Life Roving Chef Claire recently held a 6-week cookery course for residents of Bridgewater Housing Association at Bargarran Community Centre.

Bargarran Community Centre is a long-established community hub in Erskine, Renfrewshire, serving local residents with social, educational, recreational, and support activities. It is located at Bargarran Road in the Bargarran area of Erskine.

The association organised the course, following positive feedback from residents after Claire delivered a pilot project at Calvay Housing in the east end of Glasgow. The course was themed around healthy cookery.

Eight participants attended the course, and chose the recipes. These included main courses such as: sweet and sour Quornspaghetti Bolognaiseslow-roasted vegetables and couscousvegetable tikka masala with pilau rice, and sausage and pasta bake. Participants also learned nourishing soup dishes, such as Italian cannellini soup, and lentil and vegetable soup. Claire also demonstrated how to make tiffin.

One Bridgewater Housing resident said: “I have been a vegetarian for 42 years, so learning new dishes was great. Claire is a fantastic instructor with great knowledge”

Another resident said she had enjoyed getting out the house, adding: “I really enjoyed taking part and meeting new people and realising that cooking isn't so hard.”

Bridgewater Housing Association is a Scottish registered social landlord and charity based in Inchinnan near Erskine. It provides affordable housing, sheltered and extra-care housing, property factoring services, and Care and Repair services across parts of western Scotland.
