Residents of Calvay Housing Association in Glasgow's East End enjoyed a veggie meal as part of The Big Lunch – a national initiative to bring together neighbours and communities. VfL chef Claire held a cookery demonstration of plant-based dishes, followed by a meal for ten local people at the Calvay Centre in the Barlanark neighbourhood.
The Big Lunch is an annual UK-wide event which brings millions of people together for a few hours of friendship, food and fun. It’s a great way for people to get to know each other better, have a good time, and celebrate where they live.
The residents enjoyed Indian inspired treats courtesy of Claire, including mushroom and chickpea curry, pilau rice, flatbreads and red onion chutney. Ingredients were funded by the Eden Project Big Lunch.
Chef Claire took questions during the cookery demonstration, and while preparing the lunch, highlighting that most of the ingredients could be found in local supermarkets and convenience stores.
“Chef Claire made the cooking demonstration very enjoyable and explained to the audience what she was doing on a step-by-step basis,” Calvay Centre manager Eddie Cusick said afterwards. “It was a very enjoyable session and delivered in a way that relaxed and informed participants.”
Calvay Housing Association was established in 1985 and has improved the housing conditions of local residents with hundreds of refurbishment and new-build schemes.
